Are PRDs Dead?

prompt sets are the new PRDs

Hey there.

Well done on clicking the fast forward link.

Now, on to something critical:

Microsoft’s CPO Aparna Chennapragada said to me in a podcast interview, “Prompt Sets are the new PRDs.”

Does she think PRDs are dead?

Well, Microsoft has a $3.68T market cap. So when their CPO is talking about PRDs, it matters.

In the previous email, we saw why context engineering and AI evals are more important than PRDs (which reinforces Aparna’s point).

Here are a few personal thoughts:

I disagree with the notion that PRDs are replaced, though I respect the thinking behind it.

Prompt sets are just examples, something good PMs have always included in specs

The core problems in products today are:

• What should we build and why?

• How do we measure success?

• What are the risks and trade-offs?

You need a PRD for those.

“Prompt Sets” are just better requirement writing with concrete examples instead of abstract descriptions.

One component of the PRD, but not a replacement.

So here are the next steps you should take:

a. Try out Prompt Sets with your team!

Even try throwing out the PRD.

The best rituals are team and company specific.

b. Embrace Prototypes!

One thing Aparna and I both 100% agree on?

Every PM must prototype. Do NOT stay at words to explore the solution space.

Now please check your inbox. The next lesson of the AI PM Blueprint should have arrived in it.
